The Colchester Wemyss family and the Dutch Water Gardens at Westbury on Severn

Westbury Church, Westbury-on-Severn, Westbury-on-Severn GL14 1PW Heritage Open Day: Di Landon and Jerry Green will talk on the history and redevelopment of the gardens created by the Colchester Wemyss family who were significant local landowners particularly around Mitcheldean. Di Langdon, local historian, and Jerry Green, manager of the gardens, give a talk on the gardens and the Wemyss family. The original gardens were created by the Colchester Wemyss family in the time of Maynard Colchester between 1696 and 1705. The Colchester Wemyss family were important landowners, especially around Mitcheldean, owning, amongst other properties, what is today Mitcheldean Town Hall. Their last home was what is now the Wilderness Centre. The family moved away from Westbury and in 1805 Westbury Court was demolished, but the family returned to the village one hundred years later.
