Heritage Open Day: St Michael's Church stands on the site of the Roman fort of Aballava on Hadrian's Wall and is made of stone from the wall itself. It has had an interesting history over the centuries and is well worth a visit. Grade I Listed, 12th century and one of only a small number of fortified churches in Cumbria, the church represents many layers of history, built on the site of the Roman Fort of Aballava, alongside the line of Hadrian’s Wall. It suffered turbulent times during cross-Border warfare and later at the hands of the notorious Border reivers – and there are many visible architectural features in the church today from those days.
