Heritage Open Day: Enjoy a guided walk around this beautiful churchyard and discover the myths and legends of some of the tree species evident there. A Churchyard walk with a difference ! Come along and find out more. Until the opening of the Civic Cemetery in 1856, this was Berwick's only burial ground which was used by all denominations. As well as its many gravestones, there is a great variety of trees. This walk explores the myths, legends and superstitions of trees, from pre Christain times to the modern era, using examples living in the churchyard. Amongst others, we will explore myths surrounding the Glastonbury thorn, millennium yew, holly, birch and rowan. Does holly ward off evil fairies? What is the association between a yew, a saint and a sheep?...
