Sat 13 Sep:12 til 1800 hours; Sun 14 Sep:10 til 1800 hours; Free Entry. 1 Upper Strand Street, Sandwich CT13 9EF Heritage Open Day: The Leave to Land Exhibition is about the Kitchener Camp, where nearly 4000 men came in 1939 as refugees from Nazi Germany. The Bell Hotel has close links to the golf courses in and around the Sandwich Bay area, including the famous Royal St George's The refugees lived in an old World War One army camp, located on the north side of the Toll Bridge. The camp was run by two Jewish brothers , Jonas & Phineas May. Phineas kept a diary, and spent his first week at the Bell Hotel, before he moved to a hut in the camp. Later on, after war had broken out, the camp was turned into a British Army training camp for the Pioneer Corps, headed by Lord Reading, who lived at the Bell between December 1939 & May 1940.
