Sandwich Guildhall Museum, Cattle Market, Sandwich CT13 9AH
Heritage Open Day: The museum tells the story of the ancient town of Sandwich through the ages from its very early beginnings up until the Second World War. The museum's displays include a 1st century A.D. Roman bowl, the 1300 editions of the Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest, an extensive collection of trading tokens and items still used today for traditional civic events, such as a medieval moot horn. As well as visiting the museum, visitors can explore the 16th century courtroom and learn about its history from the knowledgeable volunteers. Find out why there are metal spikes behind the dock where the accused stands (it's not to stop them escaping!) and why the mayor depicted in the stained glass window is wearing red despite the Mayor of Sandwich's robes being black...
