Eminent Victorian artist A.O Hemmings, designed the reredos, murals & roof paintings and the 3 stained glass windows in the Sanctuary. St James Church is an important part of the history of New Brighton. The church is constructed in sandstone from nearly Storeton quarry, topped with a slate roof, and has a cruciform plan.
