Heritage Open Day: In recent years St. Mary the Virgin in Poltimore has become a 'Festival Church' and is generally closed. (Services are held on Festivals only). However, it has some remarkable features which we would like visitors to enjoy on September 20th. The church of St. Mary the Virgin in Poltimore has been the heart of the village and the Poltimore House estate and the Bampfylde family for over 600 years. It is a Grade 1 Listed building with a fourteenth century bell tower. The six bell date from 1723. The font is Norman and older than the church itself. Some major restoration took place around 1880 including the moving forward of the Rood screen originally built around 1520.
