Sunderland Road, South Shields NE34 6NG Heritage Open Day: St Peter's church open for visiting from 10.00-12.00, with the churchyard memorial records available. There will be an illustrated talk at 10.30 by Jean Stokes on the architecture of the church, Why French Gothic? Refreshments before & after. In 1867 Mr Charles Hodgson Fowler designed St Peter's Church in Harton Village using the French Gothic style. This hour-long fully illustrated talk will aim to answer the question why? Why, in this little rural village of Harton with a few houses, two pubs, one blacksmith, one shop and four farms, most belonging to the Georgian period, did he decide to build a French Gothic style parish church? Along the way we shall investigate the career of Mr Fowler and the impetus behind the building of this little Victorian church.
