Talk: What Did Diversity Mean to the Romans?
Wed 22 Oct 25
West Berkshire Museum | Wednesday 22 October | 7pm | £5
West Berkshire Museum The Wharf Newbury RG14 5AS
According to the Latin poet Virgil's epic about the origins of Rome, the Aeneid, Jupiter, king of the gods, promised the Romans an 'empire without end' in space and time. Such a vast empire would go on to span three continents, with countless peoples living within its borders. The diversity of the Roman empire is undeniable. Indeed, our word 'diversity' is from the Latin word diversitas. But what did diversitas mean for the Romans? And did the Romans understand their world as diversus, or diverse? Find out at this talk by Dr Samuel Agbamu. Dr Samuel Agbamu teaches and researches Latin literature, Roman history, and how ancient Rome continues to shape modern societies. This talk is part of Black History Month 2025. Bookings close at 4pm the day before the talk. Book online: tinyurl.com/yj6xfm2m...
