Finchley Symphony Orchestra and Christopher Stark open their new season with an intriguing programme. It brings together froth and fun inspired by 20th century New York with a condensed orchestral version of an operatic masterpiece. Samuel Barber is best known for his haunting ‘Adagio’. The ‘Souvenirs’ suite by contrast is a set of dances for a ballet and in place of heavy emotion we get a joyous pastiche of the Palm Courts of New York hotels in the early twentieth century. If you enjoy the richness and passion of Wagner’s music but cannot afford five hours to see a full performance of Die Meistersinger, Henk de Vlieger’s ‘Tribute’ could be for you.
