It brings together froth and fun inspired by 20th century New York with a condensed orchestral version of an operatic masterpiece. Samuel Barber is best known for his haunting ‘Adagio’. The ‘Souvenirs’ suite by contrast is a set of dances for a ballet and in place of heavy emotion we get a joyous pastiche of the Palm Courts of New York hotels in the early twentieth century.
