Join the Florence Nightingale museum from the comfort of your own home! David S Stewart OBE D.Litt.h.c.DL, a retired headteacher, is a member of the Nottinghamshire History of Nursing group will be delivering an informative and interesting talk about The Nottinghamshire Nightingales. “Our story begins not in Nottinghamshire, but in the Prestwich Asylum near Manchester. A former nurse, now suffering with dementia was admitted in 1889. In her case notes it records that she thought she was twenty and that the year was 1860. However, when prompted she would recall Miss Nightingale and the hospital at Netley. The nurse was Mary Barker, the first Nurse to be recorded on the Nightingale school of nursing register in 1860.” This talk will delve into the lives and stories of 25 women who went on to study at St. Thomas’ Hospital and became Nightingale Nurses. These women were pioneers and they tell a fascinating story in the early history of the training of nurses. Stories included that of Mrs. Ann Enfield, Mrs. Wardroper, Maria Trueman and many more. In addition to this amazing talk our Collections Manager, Hannah, will be on hand to show everyone our Nightingale Nurses Album – a Photograph album containing 31 carte de visite of Nurses from the Nightingale Training School – which is on display in our museum. It contains photographs of a few of the nurses mentioned in this talk and is rarely opened in order to help with its preservation...
