Delivered entirely outdoors, this nationally recognised course teaches the essential skills of map reading, navigation, and route planning through practical, hands-on learning led by experienced instructor Brian Hall (Rockyventures Ltd) an approved NNAS provider. Ideal for beginners and improvers, the course focuses on understanding the map, using a compass, and developing strategies to navigate varied terrain confidently. Who Is This Course For? Walkers who want to develop map reading and navigation skills Outdoor enthusiasts exploring routes beyond marked paths Anyone aiming to progress towards Silver or Gold NNAS Awards Suitable for ages 14+ (under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian) What You’ll Learn Our NNAS Bronze Navigator syllabus covers all the core navigation fundamentals, including: Understanding OS & Harvey maps and their key features Setting the map to the ground by eye and compass Identifying landmarks, grid references, contours and symbols Measuring distance using pacing and timing Planning safe and efficient walking routes Taking and following basic compass bearings Navigation strategies for different terrain and weather conditions Hazard awareness and emergency procedures Personal and group safety in outdoor environments All successful participants receive an official NNAS Bronze Award e-certificate. Equipment Needed Essential personal kit includes: Walking boots or trail shoes Waterproof jacket and trousers Warm layers, hat, and gloves Rucksack (approx. 30 L) Map & compass (provided if required) Packed lunch, snacks, and water A full kit list is provided upon booking.
