Starting from Eskdale, this circular route is considered one of the best ways to climb England’s highest mountain, combining peaceful valleys, rugged ascents, and breathtaking summit views away from the busy tourist trails. This is a full mountain day for fit and experienced walkers ready for an unforgettable Lake District adventure. What to Expect We begin our journey following the Esk River, gradually gaining height before the climb up to Birkett Pen, offering early panoramic views over the Eskdale Valley. From here, we ascend to the summit of Scafell Pike (978 m), England’s highest mountain, before continuing towards Mickledore and passing beneath the impressive cliffs of Broad Stand. The highlight of the day is the ascent of Lord’s Rake, a steep, rocky gully that leads to the summit of Scafell (964 m). It’s a thrilling climb that demands focus and delivers an immense sense of achievement. Expect sweeping views across the Coniston fells, Great Gable, and the Eskdale Valley throughout this challenging but unforgettable day.
