First performed in Leipzig in 1724, Bach revised the St. John Passion several times before arriving at the version which is commonly performed today. The passion story is presented through the lens of the account in St. John’s gospel. With a full performance lasting over two hours and requiring an orchestra and a full complement of soloists, it’s a work often thought of as beyond the reach of small choirs. But in line with the ethos of both Music Box Wealden and Laughton Village Choir, today’s abridged performance presents the biblical story and the essence of the work in a thoroughly accessible way.
