Lost for words? Stockport care home to host dementia advice event
Wed 4 Mar 26
Wednesday 4th March at 10.30am-12.30pm
Abney Hall Abney Hall Park Manchester Road Cheadle Cheshire SK8 2PD
A care home in Stockport is inviting the local community to its free dementia advice event. On Wednesday 4th March at 10.30am-12.30pm, Care UK's Abney Court on Manchester Road in Cheadle will be holding a special session as part of The Big Dementia Conversation – a nationwide initiative designed to show people how to better understand common symptoms and how it is possible to live well with the condition. While awareness of dementia has improved, survey data from Care UK reveals families still face challenges when it comes to communicating with loved ones. Nearly four in 10 people (39%) said they avoid visiting relatives with dementia because of how difficult it can be, and nearly all of those polled (96%) feel communication barriers prevent meaningful interaction. To help address these challenges, Care UK has launched The Big Dementia Conversation for the third year running, encouraging practical support and greater understanding for families and communities. The 'Singing for the Brain' event at Abney Court will be led by the home's lifestyle team, who have received training from the Alzheimer's Society. During the session, members of the community living with dementia will sing songs they know and love in a fun and friendly environment to improve activity and wellbeing. Zoe Smart, Home Manager at Abney Court, said: While awareness of dementia has improved, our research highlights the challenges families face throughout their dementia journey, particularly around communicating with loved ones. Music is a powerful way to bridge that gap, and our event is a great example of how shared experiences can spark joy and improve wellbeing. The session will not only bring people together through song but also provide practical tips to help families and communities connect in meaningful ways...
