Join us as we celebrate some of the greatest inventions to come from the North East, daily from Saturday, 14th February to Sunday, 1st March. 1820s Landscape Hear about one of the region’s most famous inventions – Locomotion No. 1, and hear about how George Stephenson developed it. Visitors can pop up to Pockerley Old Hall and learn how the Tynemouth Volunteer Brigade was officially founded, the first of its kind! Learn the history of the Durham Ox. At Pockerley Old Hall, try your hand at a charcoal drawing of Locomotion No. 1. The 1900s Pit Village and Colliery Learn about the history of George Stephenson and his Geordie lamp at the Mahogany Drift Mine. The 1900s Town Hear about Swan’s incandescent light bulb in the Co-op hardware department. Learn the story of how Domestos was in the North East in the Co-op grocery department. Learn about Charles Algernon Parsons and his work with steam turbines in the garage. Head to W Smith’s Chemist to explore the stories of Lucozade and Walker’s friction match. In JR & D Edis photographers. hear about Charles Nicols developments. Pop into the Masonic Hall to design your own invention competition and win a prize. Over in No.2 Ravensworth Terrace, learn all about the history of the Be-Ro book and watch cooking demonstrations each day. The 1950s Town Head to The 1950s Town to discover the story of the Robinson family who opened Britain’s first self-service pet suppliers in Newcastle. Make your own marvellous Meccano creation in the 1950s welfare hall. from Monday 16th to Saturday 21st February. On the 17th, 19th, 24th and 26th February, our Learning Team will be in the A Reece workshop making and adapting catapult designs to see what makes them throw and object the furthest.
