The Oxfordshire Museum OX20 1SN About the Workshop Explore the strength and versatility of English bulrush and make an attractive shopper or foraging basket with handles or an over shoulder strap. During the workshop you will learn a selection of rush weaving techniques including using a forma, check weave starter, pairing weave, a border, plaiting and attaching handles. You can make your basket to your own design; be guided in adding other weaves such as waling and forming handles or a strap in 3-end or 5-end plait, cordage or sennet. You can also bring your own handles such as leather or strapping if you wish. Rush is a bright green when harvested and mellows to a golden yellow over time. The techniques you learn can be carried forward after the workshop and are applicable to any soft plant fibre weaving - materials such as yellow flag iris, cattails, daffodil stems offer different colours and textures. Suitable for beginners or intermediate rush weavers interested in this design. All equipment will be provided. Rush is a soft material that is worked wet and is a little muddy so wear appropriate clothing and bring an apron if you wish. This is a two day workshop 10.15am - 4.15pm on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June. About the Tutor Katrina Green is a rush basketmaker and chair seater based in West Oxfordshire; she uses rush harvested in the southeast and east of England.
