Sale care home to step back into 1940s to honour VE Day

Fri 8 May
11am-4pm
Oakfield Croft 1 Oakfield Sale Greater Manchester M33 6NB A care home in Sale is inviting the local community to mark 81 years since the end of the second world war in Europe.   On Friday 8th May from 11am-4pm, Care UK’s Oakfield Croft, off Washway Road, is throwing a 1940s-themed party to honour the anniversary of VE Day. VE Day marks the moment Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties. During the care home’s celebration, residents and guests can enjoy an afternoon of delicious 1940s-themed food, live entertainment and plenty of dancing as they come together to embrace the spirit of the era. Resident Jane Wilkinson, 93, said: “As a child, I lived through the second world war. When I was living in London, there was a bombing raid on Britain; luckily, my house was not hit; however, a few houses not far from me were hit by the missiles. So, my mother moved our family to Aberdeen and she said she continued her education there. “I’m very lucky to be alive, and this is why it is important to celebrate VE Day. Young people should be educated about VE Day, so they understand what it was like for many who lived through the war. We should pray for hope and peace.’ Roxanne Walsh, Home Manager at Oakfield Croft, added: “VE Day holds great significance for so many people, and we’re proud to be marking the 81st anniversary by bringing residents and the local community together. “This event offers a wonderful opportunity to reawaken nostalgic memories and provides a meaningful way for older people, including those living with dementia, to connect with others while commemorating such a significant moment in history. “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the people of Sale for what is set to be a day to remember.”...
