Experience a thrilling concert of three extraordinary works performed live by Ensemble 360, Music in the Round’s acclaimed collective of world-class classical musicians.
The evening opens with Schubert’s Quartettsatz, a dramatic and concentrated work that was intended as the opening movement of a larger quartet but remained unfinished. In just nine minutes, Schubert creates an atmosphere of remarkable intensity, moving between restless energy, lyrical beauty and sudden drama.
Next comes Janácek’s Intimate Letters, one of the most personal and emotionally charged works in the string quartet repertoire. Inspired by the composer’s passionate relationship with Kamila Stösslová, the quartet is full of vivid contrasts, tenderness and urgency. Janácek’s distinctive musical language gives voice to emotions that are by turns playful, yearning, ecstatic and deeply poignant.
The concert culminates in Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, an iconic masterpiece of extraordinary power and intensity. Drawing on Schubert’s own song of the same name, the quartet explores themes of mortality, fear and acceptance, juxtaposing moments of driving rhythmic energy with passages of haunting beauty. It remains one of the undisputed pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire.
Throughout the evening, Ensemble 360’s musicians introduce the works from the stage, sharing fascinating insights into the music, its composers and the stories behind each piece. These introductions make the concert an engaging and welcoming experience for both seasoned concertgoers and those discovering chamber music for the first time.
