Heritage Open Day: Step inside and see 1000 years of history! When William the Conqueror invaded England and won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Oxford Castle was marked by the Normans as the ideal place for a motte-and-bailey castle. Over time, our site transformed from a castle into a prison. Today, after one millennium, Oxford Castle Prison is one the most unique treasures of our city.
Guests will be able to visit the bottom of St George's Tower, the Crypt, D-wing and the 1st floor, with tour guides on hand to provide further information. Please note: St George's Tower will be closed during this event.
