This profound concert pairs Eric Whitacre’s contemporary masterpiece, The Sacred Veil, with Gabriel Fauré’s timeless Requiem in D minor (Op. 48). Together, they offer a human and comforting perspective on mortality across the centuries.
Eric Whitacre’s The Sacred Veil is an hour-long, 12-movement tour de force. It features a text by Charles Anthony Silvestri commemorating his young wife, Julie, who died of ovarian cancer. The score is both structurally complex and emotionally direct. It stands as a monumental, non-religious, and non-political contribution to our understanding of grief.
Whitacre’s movements map the intimate narrative of courtship, love, loss, and the ultimate search for solace. The music shifts from heart-wrenching sorrow to meditative affirmation.
Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem was composed between 1887 and 1890. This seven-movement masterpiece is celebrated as one of the most beloved choral works of the 19th century. It is a “Lullaby of Death”, which unlike the dramatic, terrifying Requiems of Mozart or Verdi, radiates serene comfort. It focuses entirely on eternal rest.
The Requiem features breathtaking moments for soprano and baritone soloists. This includes the soaring, peaceful beauty of the famous Pie Jesu, Hostias, and Libera me, perfectly balanced by rich choral textures.
