Birmingham Philharmonic’s last concert at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall formed part of the ‘Save the Town Hall Campaign’. Three years on then and, whisper it quietly, the Town Hall is back, looking firmly on the path to salvation. We are therefore delighted to welcome them back for their 2018 concert, An Invitation to the Dance under far happier circumstances! “A well structured and often electrifying performance” – Birmingham Post (2012) “The BPO these days plays with great depth of tone […] wonderfully-delivered articulation and phrasing, and a platform discipline which would put some world-strutting professional orchestras to shame.” – Birmingham Post (2014) Under the expert eye of conductor, Richard Laing, this will without doubt be a night of musical marvels. The performance will open with Weber’s “Invitation to the Dance” before moving onto pieces by Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky to Kodaly and Strauss – amongst esteemed others.

Choreographed by contemporary Kathak icon Aditi Mangaldas, Echoes is a stunning approach to the traditional art form of Kathak. In this piece, both choreographer and performer tell us about the strings that connect us to our ancestors. Aakash Odedra dances across a stage invaded by cascades of bells as a mesmerizing symbol of his resounding ties, offering us a glance into Kathak’s divinity and mysterious ways. I Imagine is an exploration of the dynamism of dance-theatre by embodying three generations of immigrants through masks and acting. The result? An intuitive and humorous story of migration and identity. This piece was co-created with spokenword artist Sabrina Mahfouz whose voice opens the dozens of suitcases piled on stage, thus unveiling heart-felt stories that Aakash’s characters share with us.

But don’t just take our word for it: the legendary Andrés Segovia himself praised Mills’s “purity of technique and musical sensitivity”. This magical evening recital finds Mills deep in the Spanish romantic repertoire: music drenched in sunlight, shade, and the balmy fragrance of the Spanish night. What better way also for us to say farewell to John as a much respected teacher at the College and to celebrate the inspirational guidance he has provided as a mentor to generations of young performers.

Terra Firma tells stories drawn from the very ground on which we build our communities. Folk is a vintage fairy-tale, set in a rich fantastical world under the boughs of an upside-down tree, as darkly whimsical as it is enchanting Tundra is a barren landscape where ultra-modern creativity blinks into life and tears pages from Russian folk dance and revolution. Atalaÿ is a watch tower from which far off lands can be seen from four points; a contagious dance influenced by the warmth of the Mediterranean.

Exceptionally versatile, with a repertoire of three hundred years of music from around the world which they turn upside down and infuse humour, energy, passion and pathos. It’s a mix of Vivaldi, French café music, Argentinean tangos, Irish Laments and polkas from Finland and their name comes from the fact that they have a real sense of occasion, creating a party atmosphere wherever they play. They really have fun in their concerts with virtuoso performances, zany and offbeat (but never off-putting) humour. The six musicians are led by Arne Richards who has a lovely way of getting an audience involved during a performance. It’s the kind of show where it’s not unknown for a few couples to get up and dance! It’s an exciting and approachable musical evening that brings listeners young and old a lot of pleasure, perhaps jogging memories and certainly inspiring you to go out and listen some more. Ideal for an audience of all ages.

This talented four-piece boasts some of the country’s most revered international stars including Chris Garrick, one of Europe’s most celebrated jazz violinists & a regular performer with Dame Cleo Laine and John Dankworth. The raw emotion and finesse with which he plays will keep audiences hanging on every note and his speciality ‘hair tricks’ will keep everyone intrigued. Accordion player, Eddie Hession, has accompanied Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo & Jose Carreras, and was Virtuoso Accordion Champion of Great Britain. They play an impassioned yet tender mixture of blistering czardas (traditional Hungarian music - think Cossack), Russian and Ukranian folk songs, grief-stricken ballads and rolicking dances from Romania and Bulgaria. The band will make sure everyone finds their inner gypsy with opportunities to join in with songs and there are plenty of foot-stomping numbers to get people up and dancing too.

Artspace present an exhibition on the theme of ‘Seeing the Light’ at Déda Derby (Derby’s dance and performance centre) from Friday 5th January to Saturday 24th February 2018. Artists were asked to respond in their own way to the theme and with their chosen media. Some artists have chosen to explore literal physical light in the world: how it continually changes and changes what we see, the contrast between darkness and brightness, the patterns created, and how it makes colours more vivid. Some have interpreted ‘light’ as energy or primordial life. Others have interpreted the theme in a metaphorical way - a desire for enlightenment and understanding of the world and ourselves.

Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish singers, his voice one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as "a tradition in himself". Musician (bouzouki, mandola and harmonica), singer songwriter, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his 45 year career. From Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s and then from Patrick Street to Andy Irvine & Dónal Lunny’s Mozaik, he has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians. As a soloist, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie. To quote the Irish Times, "Often copied, never equalled", his repertoire consists of Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dances and a compelling cannon of his own self-penned songs.

Calan bring together the remarkable talents of five young musicians giving a fresh and vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music. With a contemporary and lively approach they breathe new life into the old traditions through their sparkling melodies, foot tapping tunes and spirited and energetic performances of Welsh step dancing. They blast their way through some of the old favourite reels, jigs and hornpipes with fast paced and uplifting arrangements before melting into some of the most beautiful and haunting songs. Vocals in both Welsh and English combine with their unique instrumental blend of fiddles, whistles, guitar and bagpipes and a traditional reed instrument from Wales called a pibgorn made from a wooden pipe and the horns of a bull. Great fun, a sense of humour and step dancing from a champion dancer who dances in a style unique to Wales.

The Royal Ballet celebrates the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with an all-Bernstein programme from the Company’s three associate choreographers, Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon. Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic in his sources – drawing on jazz and modernism, the traditions of Jewish music and the Broadway musical – and many of Bernstein’s scores are remarkably well suited to dance. He was particularly associated with Jerome Robbins, their credits together including Fancy Free and West Side Story. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein’s music. The programme includes two world premieres by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon, marking each artist’s first foray into

Presented by Old Kent Road. SEE THE SOUND. FEEL THE MOVEMENT.  The show takes a journey through quintessential jazz, entangling movement within the graceful perspective of tap dance. Conversations of question and answer between soloists of the band and the performers expose emotions and trigger manoeuvres back and forth between each art form on stage. Led by a live musical force the show takes an experimental ride attempting to understand the journey of falling out of love. These fervent dancers find ways to uncover their passion, love for, and raw relationship with tap dance. Using the sparse setup of the wooden boards concealing how love can never be defined, Fall Out pushes the boundaries of strength and intensity through the bare sounds of music and dance, articulated through complex rhythms and spectacularly technical performance.  Running time: 55 mins, no interval. Live Screening by the Royal Ballet. Kenneth MacMillan’s source for Manon was the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, already adapted for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score drawn from across Massenet’s music, including his famous yearning Elégie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, with the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet’s repertory, and a touchstone of adult, dramatic dance. MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon and her struggle to escape poverty. Designs by his regular collaborator Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable destitution. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Man

Shakespeare’s tale of love and loss becomes compelling dance drama in Christopher Wheeldon’s ballet adaptation, with music by Joby Talbot. Christopher Wheeldon, Artistic Associate of The Royal Ballet, created his adaptation of Shakespeare’s late great romance The Winter’s Tale for The Royal Ballet in 2014. Building on the success of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Winter’s Tale received ecstatic praise at its premiere, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its intelligent, distinctive and emotionally powerful story, told through exquisite dance. It is now widely judged to be a modern ballet classic. The story follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a seemingly miraculous return to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. With powerful designs by Bob Crowley and atmospheric music by Joby Talbot, The Winter’s Tale is
