Jamie Smith’s MABON are among the UK’s foremost and finest exponents of original, interCeltic music. Vocals, accordion, fiddle, bouzouki, bass and drums are subtly exploited by five dynamic, accomplished musicians, working traditional forms and styles anew in songs and melodies by composer Jamie Smith. MABON’s distinctive, infectious and multi-award winning music explores the styles of the Celtic traditions and works them anew; the music is self-styled, singular and toe-tappingly good – an irresistible blend of world music and Celtic roots, filled with energy, joy and passion. The energetic sound of jigs and reels; or a graceful mazurka, an ecstatic muiñera; a haunting Welsh-language love-song or a driving, sing-along, fantasy epic – all are given the same refreshing, creative treatment as the band dances skilfully along the borders between Celtic heritage and contemporary sound. Music for Diggers, Levellers and Ranters! A welcome return for Glastonwick and Ropetackle favourites The Men They Couldn’t Hang, who for 34 years have combined stirring, anthemic music and intelligent, inspirational words, often with historical themes (‘Ironmasters’, ‘Ghosts Of Cable Street’ ‘The Colours’). With their new album ‘Cock A Hoop’ due for release, they are as feistily irreverent – and relevant – as ever. A band to make you dance and think at the same time. Support comes from Attila the Stockbroker’s brand-new Barnstormer 1649, who combine early music and punk with songs and tunes set around the time of the English Civil War and Commonwealth, but very much with an eye for what’s happening now. Featuring the crumhorn, cornamuse, shawm, five different recorders, violin, viola, mandola, mandocello, guitar, bass, drums and words.

Who is El Hablador£ It is Ross Noble. No, but who is the one they call El Hablador£ I just said, it’s Ross Noble. You know£ Long hair, does stand up where he dances about the stage, spinning out all the nonsense in his head into a show. But what is the legend of El Hablador£ I don’t think it’s a thing. It is clearly Ross coming up with a name for his show, so he can make out like he is some sort of mysterious shadowy figure. Ok I get it. Ross Noble returns to dance around the stage spinning out all the nonsense in his head into a hilarious stand up show. At some point, he may wander into a shadowy part of the stage and look a bit shadowy. Age guidance: 15+

Legendary singer-songwriter Van Morrison shows no sign of slowing down as he continues to work on exciting new material as well as tour dates across Europe and USA. Also, this year is a very significant one as it marks 50 years since the release of his seminal album Astral Weeks. Van Morrison started his career as a teenager in the late 1950s covering the top tunes of the day in various groups around Belfast. He then rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he recorded the classic single Gloria. Yet, it was as a solo star that Van Morrison’s career sky-rocketed when he released the hugely popular Brown Eyed Girl in 1967 followed by classic albums Astral Weeks and Moondance.

Schubert himself found his own Wanderer Fantasy too difficult to perform, and said of it ‘the devil may play it’. In four movements, played without a break, it is based on the theme of his song ‘The Wanderer’, which is repeated in different forms at the start of each movement. The ‘little’ A-major Sonata is so-called to distinguish it from the 1828 work performed in Programme 3, while this Sonata in A minor, the second of three sonatas Schubert wrote in this key, was composed in 1823, the same year as the song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin. The Four Impromtus D 899 are lyrical and dance-like. Schubert Fantasy in C major, D 760, ‘Wanderer’ Schubert Sonata in A, D 664 Schubert Sonata in A minor, D 784 Schubert Four Impromptus, D 899

Coppelia - St Margarets Festival Ballet
For the eleventh year, St Margarets Village Hall will be the setting for a magical summer event. The St Margarets Festival Ballet present Delibes’ delightful ballet Coppelia in a fully staged and beautifully costumed production. Coppelia was first performed in 1870 and is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann with a stunning score composed by Leo Delibes. The ballet tells of a mechanical doll so convincingly life-like that the recently betrothed Franz falls in love with her. During rural festivities to celebrate a new bell for the village church, Franz enters the house of Dr Coppelius, the doll’s creator, to meet his true love. He is discovered, but all are amazed when the doll comes to life and dances - It is in fact Swanilda, Franz’s jilted fiancée who has impersonated Coppelia. Coppelia is revealed to be no more than a doll, and Franz realises his true love. The ballet ends with the joyous celebration of their marriage.

The large company features professional dancers supported by talented young local performers under the direction of choreographer Sarah Dean. Between the performances on Sunday 12th August the cast invite all audience members to join them for afternoon tea with homemade cakes to celebrate another successful ballet in St Margarets. There are just six performances of Coppelia and seats are limited. Tickets are on sale now so please book early to avoid disappointment.
Performances: Thursday 9th August at 7.00pm, Friday 10th August at 7.00pm, Saturday 11th August at 2.00pm and 7.00pm, Sunday 12th August at 2.00pm and 5.30pm. Tickets £13.00, Children and OAP’s £9.00 each. For tickets: Telephone 07800 852535, tickets can also be bought from the Village Shop and Village Post Office.

Joanna MacGregor, one of the world’s most innovative and creative pianists, combines her role as Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music with a busy career as concert soloist, teacher and festival curator. From the powerful opening chords to the stormy finish, Beethoven’s 32 Variations explore not only the range and colour of the piano but also every imaginable technique. Then Chopin’s Mazurkas, rich and flamboyant, lead into the young Alberto Ginastera’s vividly imagined Argentinian folkloric dances. Sofia Gubaidulina’s Chaconne is another youthful work based on an older form. Black Earth, written by Fazil Say in 1997, is a fusion of Eastern and Western styles and brings a note of loneliness and loss. Finally, Beethoven’s great middle-period Appassionata sonata closes an evening of extraordinary emotions.

As shadows draw in, they eventually overcome their suspicions of each other and exchange stories; stories of love, stories of loss, stories of kings. Where have they come from? Where are they going and what is so special about this night? How many stars are there in the sky? William Forsythe is one of the foremost choreographers of his generation. For this unusual configuration of new and existing work, Forsythe creates an intimate, pure evening of choreography, stripped down to its essence. The works range from sparse analytic condensation to baroque inspired counterpoint. The intricate phrasing of the dancers’ breath is the primary accompaniment for a distillation of the geometric origins of classical ballet. The evening is performed by seven of Forsythe’s most trusted collaborators who promise to provide insight into the workings of ballet and the mind of the man who has dedicated his work to this task.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the current theatre, Sadler’s Wells presents three commissions by a new generation of UK based dance-makers: Julie Cunningham, Alesandra Seutin and Botis Seva. Julie Cunningham recently launched Julie Cunningham Company after 15 years of dancing with the renowned Merce Cunningham Dance Company and Michael Clark Company. Alesandra Seutin founded Vocab Dance Company in 2007 and has been making work, performing and teaching internationally for over a decade. Botis Seva and his collective Far From the Norm have previously performed at Sadler’s Wells with Breakin’ Convention, and curated a Wild Card evening. Using the foundations of hip hop, Seva has created a physical dance language of his own. Reckonings showcases distinctive voices who help us see the world in a different light.

Featuring a large company of singers, dancers and musicians, Carmen La Cubana is a sultry take on one of the most famous operas ever created, set against the simmering turmoil of the Cuban Revolution, 1958. “Hugely enjoyable and sexy... a fantastic adaptation” Le Parisien
