Howden has a rich history in the development and use of airships between 1915 and 1930. It was the site of one of East Yorkshire’s bases for airships that monitored shipping in the North Sea and deterred German submarines during the first world war.

Saltmarshe Hall dates from 1825 and was built by Philip Saltmarshe on the site of an earlier hall. It had been in the Saltmarshe family since medieval times and remained so until 1971 when the last Philip Saltmarshe died.
The hall stands on the banks of the River Ouse and within its own park.
