Take a walk with one of our knowledgeable rangers to look for wild orchids on Dunstable Downs. There are a variety of orchids growing on the chalk hillsides of Dunstable Downs including common spotted and bee orchids.

Runners up in the 2017 Gardeners World Competition, ’Small Garden Category’. The garden demonstrates what can be achieved in a relatively small space, 10m x 11m. Created from scratch in the Autumn of 2014, the garden is roughly courtyard in style and formed from a series of raised beds and oak structures.
A country garden of 2 acres restored and developed in recent years featuring herbaceous and shrub borders, a formal rose garden with swags, a wild flower area adjacent to the pond; in the orchard a natural wildlife pond and stream with recently expanded planting, potager with vegetables and picking flowers.
Walled garden adjoins the grounds of The Hyde (not open). Extends to approx 1 acre and features rose garden, seasonal beds and herbaceous borders, imaginatively interspersed with hidden areas of formal lawn.

Larks in the Park is a popular event offering a day of fun and entertainment for all the family, bringing together the communities of Harpenden and surrounding villages.
On the last Sunday of every month, and special occasions such as Valentine’s or Father’s Day, we open our Nest as a Cafe and serve hot & cold drinks as well as delicious homemade cakes.
Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate & Soft Drinks are all available and our cakes change weekly.
This year we will be holding a series of guided walks around the beautiful countryside surrounding the village of Clophill.
Each walk has it’s own theme and lasts 2 hours (12 – 2pm), starting and finishing at the Eco Lodges, and is led by a subject expert.
Come and join our scientists and help us to carry out a real scientific survey known as a Bioblitz!
This free event for families and adults in and around the museum grounds will feature:
- Pond dipping
- Meadow sweeping
- Wildlife surveying
- and a range of other wildlife themed walks and activities.
