Originally planted in 1866 by Edward Wheatley-Balme, High Close was designed in the fashion of the day using many of the recently discovered exotic conifers and evergreen shrubs coming into Britain from America.
Named for Dora, the daughter of the poet William Wordsworth. Wordsworth planned to build a house on the land but, after her early death, he planted the area with daffodils in her memory. Now known as Doras field the area is renowned for its spring display of daffodils and Bluebells.
Run by volunteers with the aim of promoting knowledge of the cultivation of plants particularly suited to Lakeland conditions. One of the best labelled gardens in the UK. National Collections of astilbe, daboecia, polystichum (ferns) and meconopsis. Set on the fellside with stunning views over Windermere.
The evening begins with a simple guided meditation to bring a sense of inner peace at the end of a busy week. Put the stresses and tensions of daily life behind you and enjoy an evening of relaxation with a tasty, home-cooked, vegetarian meal.
