Heritage Open Day: Bonewaldesthorne's Tower was built to protect the important port of Chester. The original Anglo Saxon tower would have been made of timber and the later stone tower dates from the 13th century. The medieval Water Tower on the City Walls, was built between 1322-5 by John de Helpstone, and was surrounded by water at that period.
