Axminster Heritage Centre
Take a trip through time to learn what has made Axminster and the surrounding area what it is today. Children can enjoy their own trail with dressing up points and interactive activities.
We tell the story of Axminster and its surrounding villages from pre-history, through Roman times, developing into a busy agricultural market town. New displays include a children's trail, and a 1930s Crabtree Axminster carpet loom, which we occasionally run. There’s a special focus on our carpet industry, founded by Thomas Whitty in 1755, with an original 18th century loom and a beautiful 1769 Whitty carpet. In the 19th century Axminster was an important brush making centre, notably for toothbrushes. Temporary exhibitions and courses provide lots to see and do. All housed in a factory built by the Whitty family, which subsequently served as a court-house and a hospital. Check our website for full details: www.axminsterheritage.org
