Cartmel Priory Gatehouse

Heritage Open Day: The Gatehouse in Cartmel was built in the 1330's in response to a Scottish raid that reached as far south as the Furness peninsula. Along with a curtain wall it acted as a deterrent to any other groups of raiders thinking of attacking the Priory. The Gatehouse and the Priory itself are the only elements of the monastery that survived the Disillusionment of the Monasteries, and since then the Gatehouse has been used as a school, a gallery and a museum.
