Early Christians celebrated Christmas at the same time as the ancient Romans were feasting and partying for the pagan Saturnalia festival. Many of the Pagan habits were therefore absorbed into our Christian traditions, present giving, holly and even party hats! All have their origins in this 2,000 year old party.

This 10 minute talk introduces the Dawsons, a middle class couple from Liverpool, who built Wray Castle and made a new life in the Lake District. James and Margaret Dawson were a middle-class couple, products of the Industrial Revolution in Liverpool.
A 10-minute talk explaining the journey this extraordinary building has been on; from family home to institution to public place. Wray Castles life has been divided equally between family home and institution. Laboratories and training colleges occupied it until recently when the last tenants left.
Get a taste of orienteering at one of our workshops this February half term. Have a go at designing your own orienteering markers which will be used in our very own orienteering course here on site. Then join one of our team outdoors and have a go at orienteering first hand.

This 10 minute talk will equip visitors with the skills to understand the architecture of Wray Castle - inside and out. You’ll hear about how the Gothic Revival style came about, how the practicalities of an early Victorian house were fitted in and how the Dawsons’ personalised their new house.
Hes been described as the father of a virtual folk dynasty, as dad of Seth Lakeman, Sean Lakeman and Sam Lakeman and father-in-law of Cara Dillon and Kathryn Roberts. Geoff has been acclaimed for his masterful playing of the rare Crane duet concertina, his rich, melodic voice and relaxed, amusing stage presence.
