Mark Carr: The Cup of Life

‘It is said that if one drinks from the cup of life to gain an immortal soul, another’s life is taken’.

This exhibition reflects on this symbolic idea to explore the notion that every action or cause taken in this world has a reaction or effect.

It contains three elements:
•A triptych entitled The Wall, which explores our perception of fixed boundaries and why they are made.
•A re-working of Hogarth’s The Rake’s Progress entitled Adam’s Progress; a set of eight woodcut prints following the fate of Promethium/Frankenstein/God-made
•An academy type wall of paintings satirically playing with the core theme of the exhibition, yet displaying a rather dark underbelly.

The work references 18th century satirists and social commentators such as Hogarth, Gillray, Cruickshank and Rowlandson as well as the use of ‘found images’ similar to the later work of Sickert.
