On 28 December 2018, the Home Secretary Sajid Javid declared the arrival of asylum seekers by boat a “major incident.” In September 2018, the United Nations Refugee Agency reported that more than 1,600 people died or went missing while attempting to reach Europe so far in that year. In this session, we’ll explore how the law responds to the competing demands of states for sovereignty over their borders and asylum seekers for sanctuary from persecution.
