Stafford Film Theatre: The French Dispatch

Wes Anderson / Germany USA 2021 / 103 min / Cert 15

The latest film from maverick film maker Wes Anderson is in his usual visually interesting and eclectic style. It tells three stories as the French foreign bureau of a fictional Kansas newspaper creates its final issue. The film stars an ensemble cast featuring Benicio del Torro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Lea Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothee Chalamet, Edward Norton, William Dafoe, Henry Winkler, Matthew Amairir, Owen Wilson and, of course, Bill Murray. The picture is mainly filmed but contains bursts of energetic animation showing Anderson's meticulously arranged aesthetic and is a hand-crafted visual delight. Every moment of the film is graced by the director's love for the written word as he conjures up a collection of eccentric oddball characters.
