Talk on Edward Watkin who built Grimsby docks & Cleethorpes promenade

An Illustrated Talk on the Amazing Life of ‘Mr Grimsby’ and ‘Mr Cleethorpes’ -
Sir Edward Watkin MP – The Railway King.
You are invited to a special OPEN meeting of the Grimsby Civic Society in the Assembly Room
of Grimsby Town Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 21st July.
Geoff Scargill will be speaking about one of the most dynamic characters of the Victorian Age,
Edward Watkin. Geoff is the chair of The Watkin Society and the author of a newly-published
book on Edward Watkin, ‘Victoria’s Railway King’.
In his lifetime of 81 years, Watkin:-
v Started to dig a channel tunnel in 1880
v Helped the British Government create Canada
v Built a mainline railway into London – the Great Central
v Constructed an ‘Eiffel Tower’, later the site of Wembley Stadium
v Brought down the price of bread through the Anti-Corn Law League battle
v Campaigned to create Parks for the People in the hell-holes of Manchester and Salford
But among Watkin’s greatest achievements was his work in Grimsby and Cleethorpes. He saw the
potential to turn the small port of Grimsby into the biggest fishing port in the world. He rescued the coast at Cleethorpes from collapse into the sea - and transformed the town into a major holiday resort. In his lifetime he was ‘Mr Grimsby’ and ‘Mr Cleethorpes’
