Dorchester Gardens - Open Garden for NGS
3 contrasting gardens in a historic village surrounding the medieval abbey. 26 Manor Farm Rd (OX10 7HZ) was part of an old, larger, partially walled garden, which now has a formal lawn and planting, a vegetable garden, greenhouse and several interesting trees. From the yew hedge down towards the River Thames, is an apple orchard underplanted with spring bulbs. 6 Monks Close (OX10 7JA) is idyllic and surprising. A small spring-fed stream and sloping lawn surrounded by naturalistic planting runs down to a monastic fish pond. Bridges over this deep pond lead to the River Thames with steep banks. 7 Rotten Row (OX10 7LJ) is Dorchester's lawnless garden, a terrace with borders leads to a lovely geometric garden supervised by a statue of Hebe. Access is from the allotments.
