Legend Tripping in the British Landscape
The Friends Of The Blackden Trust are excited to announce that our annual lecture this year will be delivered on March 28th at Goostrey Village Hall, Cheshire, by Ceri Houlbrook and Dr Owen Davies, two leading British scholars of folklore, magic and supernatural belief. Both are academics at the University of Hertfordshire and are leading experts in their field, regularly collaborating on research into ritual, magic and material culture.
Legend-tripping is described as the act of visiting a particular place within the landscape because it is associated with a legend, from both folklore and fiction, often in the hope of witnessing a phenomenon as if the visitor themselves were in the legend. This talk, drawing on research conducted for the speakers’ new book 'Folklore: A Journey Through the Past and Present', explores the nature, history, and landscapes of legend-tripping in Britain and reveal how these landscapes continue to enchant, scare and inspire us. The authors delve into the caves of witches and cannibals, run from ghosts in Edinburgh, follow the footsteps of outlaws in Sherwood Forest, and seek adventure, magic and legend on the Alderley Edge of Alan Garner’s novels.
