Spring exhibitions in the Scottish Gallery
This Spring, The Scottish Gallery will throw open the windows and let nature in; filling the gallery with pieces that celebrate the wildness, spontaneity, and abundance of nature.
Angie Lewin’s Wild Garden
Inspired by both the clifftops and saltmarshes of the North Norfolk coast and the Scottish Highlands, Lewin depicts these contrasting environments and their native flora in wood engraving, linocut, silkscreen, lithograph and collage. Constantly observing the flora and fauna, walking in the woods, by fast rivers, hill lochs or beach and machair, she gathers all this natural information, representing an infinite and intimate investigation of plant forms, colour variations and patterns.
Rebecca Collins’ Loch Hourn and the Sound of Sleat
Collins’ oil paintings are inspired by the ever-changing conditions of light and weather which she experiences on a daily basis living in the northwest Highlands. Finding inspiration walking in the varied and dramatic landscape around her home, her compositions often focus on specific sections of a landscape: a snapshot of summit, sky or slope, capturing fleeting moments of atmospheric effects. She paints using multiple layers of translucent paint and glazes, which gives her work a luminous and ethereal quality.
Joe Hogan’s At Home in the Wild
Regarded as one of Ireland’s master craftsmen, Hogan has gained a worldwide reputation for his work being shortlisted for the LOEWE Craft Prize 2018. He has worked from his studio in Loch na Fooey in West Ireland since 1978. Hogan grows his own willow and harvests other naturally occurring materials such as wood, bark, larch, birch, bog myrtle, willow and catkins, which he incorporates in his work.
Katie Watson Nature in Detail
Watson is an award-winning silversmith and a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, where she studied Jewellery & Silversmithing from 2014-2018. Using chasing and repoussé, she creates wonderlands of nature in unique pieces of jewellery and silverware.
