Ligne et Couleur - An exhibition of artworks by architects in Scotland
The Scottish Society of Architect-Artists (SSAA) was founded in 1987 by former President of the Scottish Arts Club, the Late Hamish Haswell-Smith. Along with a group of like minded practicing architects Hamish convened a meeting to focus interest on exhibiting drawings, paintings, sculpture, jewellery, photography, print-making and experimental art for those involved in architectural practice or studies in Scotland. Hamish’s personal enthusiasm for all the recreational arts, encouraged many architects to become members of Scottish Arts Club and it is therefore fitting that we are returning in April to the Scottish Arts Club with our ‘Ligne et Couleur’ 2023 Exhibition.
“Architecture begins where engineering ends” according to renowned German-American architect Walter Gropius, who founded the Bauhaus School. Yet, as society now generally driven by sustainability and energy costs, embraces sciences and technologies, the merit of visual harmony, proportion or juxtaposition can be hard to champion.
In a contemporary joust where the value of investment, capital cost or future flexibility is clearly measurable, the resulting fiscal focus can sometimes seem to squeeze Art out of Architecture. Yet still it is the beauty and sensitivity of carefully considered architecture that draws visitors from across the world to appreciate the built environment. It thus remains paramount that scotland’s architects continue to refine and value their “inner artist” and through practice continue to create beautiful landscapes and townscapes for us all to enjoy.
