Uncovering the hidden stories of these incredible Thames-side landscapes.
Whilst visitors today will know the areas as the site of the Magna Carta Memorial or the famous 2,000-year-old yew tree, the landscape has actually seen some dramatic changes over the centuries. The rise and fall of great houses, including a 12th century Benedictine priory, and the disappearance of an immense riverine environment with multiple channels, wildflower meadows and dense forests, have all left their mark on the area. The archaeological investigations undertaken by the National Trust and Surrey County Archaeology Unit reveal how life revolved around the River Thames for thousands of years.
This exhibition at Chertsey Museum illustrates the progress of the work of the National Trust and Surrey County Archaeology Unit and showcases the finds they have uncovered
