Paul Janes - piano recital

To open the second half of the season the Middlewich and District Concerts Society has invited the pianist Paul Janes to give a recital. In addition we have hired a Grand Piano for the concert, from Shackleford Pianos of Macclesfield. No expense spared!

Paul has performed widely in the UK and internationally, with notable performances at major venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Cheltenham Festival and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. He works regularly with the BBC Philharmonic and the Halle Orchestras.

The recital will start with a proper classical piece - Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 12, K. 332. Then we move into the twentieth century with a diverse selection of music by John Ireland - The Island Spell, In a May Morning, Amberley Wild Brooks and Green Ways (Three Lyric Pieces). Incidentally, he came from Cheshire, having been born in Bowdon, but moved to London and the Royal College of Music at the age of fourteen.

Claude Debussy wrote Children’s Corner, a suite of six pieces, for his daughter Claude-Emma, who was about three when the work was completed. It has always proved very popular, particularly the last of the set, the Golliwogg’s Cake Walk.

The highlight of the evening could well be a performance of Francis Poulenc's The Story of Babar (L’Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant), with narration by Joy Naylor. This is based on a book by Jean de Brunhoff and follows the life of Babar, a little elephant who eventually triumphs over adversity. How it happens you will have to come to find out!

The concert will take place on Saturday, 24th January, 2026 in the Middlewich Community Centre. This can be accessed from St. Anne's Walk (CW10 9BE) or from the Civic Way car park (CW10 9BX). Admission is £12, payable at the door (cash or cheque only). For further details please visit the web-site www.madcs.org.uk or contact Roger Evans on 01606 834471.
