GEOLOGICAL HEROES: ARTHUR HOLMES. Familiar to many of us through his school text books, Arthur Holmes was the great visionary geologist of the mid twentieth century. He was the first to use radio-active isotopes to calculate the age of the earth as well as looking forward to the theory of plate tectonics. Bob Purser will tell his story. This forms part of our occasional series on Geological Heroes.
