Cathy Duncan Exhibition

Our next exhibition in the ‘Inside Out Gallery’ at the Heritage Centre is by local artist Cathy Duncan.

Cathy Duncan is a Printmaker living near Hexham, Northumberland and has a studio at The Hearth Art Centre, Horsley. Cathy specialises in Linocut prints, both colour (using the reduced or multi-plate method) or black and white.

“I was fortunate to be commissioned to design and make a series of black and white prints for The Land of Oak & Iron. These prints were then replicated on outdoor interpretation stands for specific sites across the wider Land of Oak & Iron area, drawing attention to their historic or ecological importance so adding interest to walks in the LOI countryside.

My exhibition at the Heritage Centre is about my love of trees. I was a practising Landscape Architect before becoming a printmaker, so have always valued the ecological and aesthetic presence of trees in the landscape. Trees support a whole community of animals, birds, plants and insects. They also have an important role in improving people’s well-being.

This series of prints was based on drawings made at locations in the North East. They include some of my black and white Land of Oak & Iron prints, together with linocuts of trees around Tynedale and the North Tyne.

I wanted to show the different forms trees have throughout the seasons and their ever changing appearance. Each tree species has a distinctive shape so you can identify them in the landscape. So this exhibition is a celebration of the beauty of the woodlands in the North East.

Cathy’s exhibition is visible from our Courtyard to the rear of the Heritage Centre, along with smaller artworks and cards in the display cases and shop. Please ask a member of our team if interested in purchasing any artworks from the exhibition.
The event runs everyday between 9:00am and 4:00pm daily and is free to enter.
