From Roman roads to Victorian railways – Kirkby Stephen's history on display
Heritage Open Day: Visit Kirkby Stephen Parish Church for a 'walk' through history, including a display of rarely seen Roman pottery. Saturday 14 September, 10.00 to 16.00, and Sunday 15 September, 12.00 to 16.00. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were rescue excavations at Church Brough in advance of major roadworks. A Roman cemetery was discovered, with cremation burials, whole pots, and pottery fragments. The excavations were carried out by local people and most of the finds have remained in private hands. Two pots are on loan to Penrith Museum, but many pieces will be on display in the Parish Church for the first time. The 'walk' will continue through a replica medieval market to the Victorian era of the railways, with displays of clay pipes, maps, broadsheet verses, early photographs and postcards of Kirkby Stephen. Members of Upper Eden History Society will be at the displays to answer questions and give more information.
