St. Michael's Church, Bowness on Solway

Heritage Open Day: A late Norman Church on the Solway Firth, Cumbria. St. Michael's Church is situated in the beautiful coastal village of Bowness-on-Solway at the extreme end of the recently designated World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall. It features stunning stained glass windows, both traditional and new, but it's main attraction are the 76 locally embroidered kneelers depicting local wildlife and most of the villages and hamlets in the Parish. The area also includes the Solway Coast National Landscape with the RSPB Campfield Marsh Reserve and Bowness Common, the largest raised mire remaining in England. The churchyard contains many interesting memorials including those of Manx smugglers and close by is one of the few Hearse Houses is the country.
