King Charles III was crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in Westminster Abbey on 6th May 2023 in a ceremony resonant with ancient tradition. This lecture examines crowns and coronations from their origins in 9th century BC ancient Egypt, through the ancient Hebrew biblical narrative and later Anglo-Saxons, the Norman world and into medieval Europe. Later the development of constitutional monarchy, the British Empire and to the modern day. A detailed look at the regalia, ceremonies and significance of crowns and coronations down to our present time.
