York Unlocked 2025

York Unlocked 2025 is a free festival on 27–28 September, giving public access to York’s most fascinating buildings and hidden spaces. It encourages residents and visitors to see the city differently and appreciate its architecture.

The two-day event, organised and run by dedicated volunteers, celebrates York’s
extraordinary architectural and cultural heritage. The event offers residents and visitors the
opportunity to explore around 50 buildings and outdoor spaces - a compelling mix of
returning favourites and exciting new additions, many of which are normally closed to the
public.

The exciting programme encourages residents and visitors to indulge their curiosity about
the city and see a mix of new buildings and old favourites, marveling at the architectural
delights.

Highlights for 2025 include:
• Behind the scenes access at the National Railway Museum, including its archives, art stores,
conservation studio, and inside locomotive cabs.
• The Old Bonding Warehouse
• The charming Holgate Windmill
• Some beautiful private homes in York
• Herbert House, including proposed plans for its redevelopment
• York Medical Society
• Joseph Rowntree Memorial Library
• The medieval Guildhall, where town council meetings are still held
• A variety of Walking tours across the city

Whether you are interested in history and architecture, enjoy discovering York’s hidden
gems, or simply like a good look inside some of it’s most fascinating buildings - no historical
knowledge required. An education trail will be part of the weekend, designed to engage
children or inspire your inner child.
