Heritage Open Day: An in-situ overview of this famous WW2 bridge format, how it was built and why it is there. Port Meadow Bailey Bridge – this modular steel military bridge has been in use for over 75 years and was added to the Oxford Heritage Asset Register in 2022. It was a highly innovative design for its time, with an amazing story, making a huge contribution towards ending WW2 and still used for post-war disaster relief. Described at the time as a “Wonder Bridgeâ€, Supreme Commander Eisenhower apparently put it in his top three technological and engineering developments of WW2. This 30-45 minute talk at the bridge will cover the bridge's development, its uses, construction, why this particular bridge is here and its future.
