Heritage Open Day: A unique opportunity to walk along an ancient, historic lane in the middle of Oxford which has been closed off to the public for over 100 years. Love Lane is ancient footpath which ran from Holywell Lane to Wadham College wall, then north to the Parks. It was upgraded in 1755 to become a university walk; its unofficial name in the 18-19C presumably denoted its popularity with courting couples. Jowett Walk and Savile Road covered the path in the late 19C and the remaining section between Savile Road and South Parks Road, still shown as ‘Love Lane’ on contemporary maps was closed off to the public, probably around 1910.
