Heritage Open Day: A Victorian masterpiece was how this Sacred building was described when opened in 1850. Built just off the main thoroughfare this centre of Catholic worship is haven of prayer, peace and magnificent architecture. Enter this lovely church and admire the graceful arches along the nave, the richly decorated Sanctuary and the many symbolic carvings. The East window dedicated to Mary the Mother of God, as is the church, fills the whole of the east wall and has an interesting history of being removed during the Second World War and stored down a mine. Similar windows tell about the restoration of Catholicism after the Reformation. Despite internal reordering the building itself has changed little.
