Heritage Open Day: Visit and learn the history of an important Walkley building not usually open to
the public with presentations of the architectural and social history of the buildings that have existed on
the site and guided tours. Buildings have lives of their own. They have a past, present and future and live within their
local communities. Many people will have memories of the nuns of St Joseph’s convent but may
never have been inside. The buildings here have a long history: as a grand Georgian residence for
the growing middle class of the industrial city; a Reformatory for girls; a place of worship for the
poorer Catholics of Sheffield; a hospital for mentally ill patients which closed in 1983.
