Thoroton Dovecote HOD

Heritage Open Day: The only circular thatched dovecote in Nottinghamshire. The old dovecotes often seen near farmsteads and in the grounds of country houses, in this case Thoroton Hall, are an interesting architectural feature of our countryside. These ancient buildings remind us of the days of long ago, when pigeons were kept in large numbers, chiefly for the purpose of supplying the larder when meat supplies failed. Their day and purpose served, many of these dovecotes have been left without any hope that they will become productive again, but who knows what the future will hold?
Thoroton Dovecote is in good repair in the custody of, and protected by, the Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust.
Nearby in the next village is the much larger Sibthorpe Dovecote. Why not combine a visit to Thoroton with a drive down the road to Sibthorpe?
